Frequently Asked Questions

Solving your pain. Our FAQs answered.

Since our inception in 2015, we have assisted thousands of patients living with back pain. What this experience has taught us is back pain does not discriminate. Our patients range from acute to chronic, young to elderly, from requiring walking aides to Olympians.

The underlying cause of chronic back pain symptoms is Movement Dysfunction. Modern lifestyle through conveniences and prolonged inactivity compromises necessary proficiency of functional movement including mobility, coordination and strength. A decline in these domains creates maladaptive movements which corrupt our central nervous system motor patterns.

We want patients to, not just move, but move virtuously all the time by default. This program of upskilling patients is referred to as, NeuroHAB Central Nervous System Rehabilitation. It is not exercise in the context that you may have been led to believe. When you have a solid foundation of movement proficiency; increasing strength, speed, endurance, agility and overall functional capacity to meet your daily needs is attainable.  Athletic performance becomes an individual choice. Moving well however, is mandatory for a healthy, robust pain free spine.

Our NeuroHAB Rehabilitation Programs are run by a multidisciplinary team including Exercise Physiology and Physiotherapy.  You will be provided with a receipt for all of your sessions to claim with your Private Health Insurance Extras Cover.

Functional Movement Training Centre offer a range of programs to cater to the individual patient’s clinical presentation and availability. These include:

  • 2 Week Intensive Program or Telehealth Program: For remote/interstate patients.
  • 4 week Fast-Track NeuroHAB Program: This program runs 2 x 1 hour sessions per week over 4 weeks. It generally runs outside of business hours. This program is suitable for patients who are still able to independently perform their activities of daily living and are generally active.
  • 6 Week NeuroHAB Program: This program is our standard clinical rehabilitation program which runs 2 x 1 hour sessions per week over 6 weeks. This program is suitable for all patients suffering from acute or chronic back pain.

Yes. We do require a pre-payment of the NeuroHAB Program as the sessions run for a full hour and it allows our team to run each class on time. Payment plans via direct debit are available to set up prior to commencement. Please speak to us about this option if needed.

As we are working with you to alter your default movement patterns, it is vital to consistently attend every session. If you know you will be unable to commit to this, we highly recommend you speak to our team to ensure you are able to optimise your outcomes with us.

No. Our Centre is closed on public holidays, however, these sessions will be added to the end of the program.

Please wear comfortable, active style clothing and sports shoes. No thongs or sandals.

The NeuroHAB Program runs for 6 weeks, including 2, 1 hour sessions per week. In order to achieve optimal outcomes, please ensure you adhere to the schedule. Although we will do our best to be flexible, missed appointments can delay your recovery.

There are plenty of on-street parking options on Lucinda Street as well as neighbouring streets. Please ensure you check if your park is metred as the Brisbane City Council regularly check the Woolloongabba precinct. Please note, during extreme weather events, Woolloongabba is prone to flash flooding. Our staff closely monitor any weather warnings and classes will be postponed if we are aware of an impending weather event.

Each session, your class will commence with an education topic from one of our Movement Therapists. You will then proceed to work through a series of functional movements that aim to assist you in moving well and safely in your everyday life as well as working to reduce your back pain over time. Each session you will be allocated homework to complete prior to your next class.

Sometimes our patients do experience a small increase in localised pain throughout the first couple of weeks of the program. This is due to a change in their movement patterns as they have been compensating in how they move due to their ongoing pain prior to the program. It is also normal to experience some muscular soreness as we learn to move correctly. It is important to communicate any discomfort with our Movement Therapists in order to assess the cause of any discomfort and whether any further investigations are required.

Although our rehabilitation program is delivered in a group environment, our highly trained therapists will always individualise movements and progressions. Each person’s journey through our program is unique and our staff are trained in assessing individual needs and establishing program goals and outcomes for each patient.

Our multidisciplinary team comprise of a Neurosurgeon, Exercise Physiologist, Registered Nurse and Certified NeuroHAB Movement Therapists. The team meet weekly to discuss each of our programs and the specific needs of patients within each class.

The NeuroHAB Back Pain Rehabilitation Program is unique as it is treating the cause of your back pain rather than managing symptoms as they arise. Symptom-based therapies have their place for assisting with day-to-day life during flare ups, but unfortunately, the pain will inevitably return if we do not address the root cause of your pain.

Each of our patients’ back pain journey are unique and outcomes are subject to your level of movement dysfunction, the length of time you have been suffering from back pain as well as any structural issues that may impact on your recovery.

Outcomes are also dependant on your ability to consistently attend and participate in all sessions as well as implementing what you have learnt into your daily lives between classes.

Start your road to a life without pain.
